The game of Hearts boasts a history dating back to the Spanish game of Reversis in the 1750s, but it gained significant popularity following its inclusion in Microsoft Windows in 1992. Since then, numerous adaptations have emerged across various platforms. This particular version aims to encapsulate the enjoyment of the original game within a compact download package.

Hearts is a trick-taking card game designed for four players, featuring no teams and no trump suit. It is also recognized by various names, including The Dirty, Black Lady, Chase the Lady, Crubs, and Black Maria; however, it is important to note that these names may refer to variations of play such as Black Lady. As a member of the Whist family of trick-taking games—which includes Bridge and Spades—Hearts distinguishes itself through its evasion-type mechanics. The primary objective is to avoid accumulating points, with the first player to reach 100 points resulting in the player with the lowest score being declared the winner.

In Hearts, each heart card carries a value of 1 point, while the queen of spades is worth 13 points, equating to the total value of all other cards combined.

At the outset of each round, players select three cards to pass to a randomly chosen opponent. The player holding the 2 of clubs leads the initial trick with that card. Players must follow suit when possible; if unable to do so, they may play a card from another suit. Since there is no trump suit, winning a trick requires following the lead suit. Hearts are only permitted to be led once they have been "broken," which occurs after the first heart card has been played. An extraordinary feat in gameplay occurs when a player captures every point in a round, known as "Shooting the Moon," resulting in their receiving zero points for that round while all other players incur 26 points.
